Avalon

2021 Q3 Report

splitting Avalon main into two independent parts – blockchain connectors and confidential computing (Intel SGX based) core. The SGX core may be potentially hosted at Confidential Computing Consortium while Avalon itself will focus on the blockchain integration.

Current Plans

The team is working towards release 0.7 that includes

  • Refine Avalon technical direction and plans with additional emphases on the edge
  • Integrate with K8S with emphasis on end-to-end ease of use
  • Complete scone runtime integration (including documentation and samples)
  • Update documentation, tutorials and examples
  • Establish ongoing relationships with relevant projects like Alvarium and Confidential Compute Consortium

Project Health

Project health continues to improve. A minor difficulty arose as members of the Sovrin Foundation paid staff were laid off. As members of that paid staff contributed to several code projects and community coordination within the Aries project some of those efforts briefly struggled as other community sponsors were found to help support that work. That disruption unfortunately includes the timely generation of this quarterly report. Overall, the Aries project was only very lightly affected; meetings were held, major code projects continued work without interruption, and releases continued. The lack of major disruption is a credit to the health and diversity of the project and broad support of active community members.

Key Characteristics

  • Hyperledger Avalon leverages the existence of a distributed ledger to:
    • Maintain a registry of the trusted workers (including their attestation info)
    • Provide a mechanism for submitting work orders from a client(s) to a worker
    • Preserve a log of work order receipts and acknowledgments
  • Hyperledger Avalon uses the  Off-Chain Trusted Compute Specification  defined by Enterprise Ethereum Alliance (EEA) Task Force as a starting point to apply a consistent and compatible approach to all supported blockchains
